New Delhi: Indian Railways has begun preparations for the launch of its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, which is expected to start operating by the end of this year. This will be the third train in the Vande Bharat series, after the chair-car Vande Bharat train launched in 2019. It is expected to start operating in Gujarat, although there is no official confirmation on this yet.
Preparing for the first test
U Subba Rao, general manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Chennai, said the first Vande Bharat sleeper train will roll out from Bharat Earth Movers Limited’s (BEML) plant in Bengaluru by September 20. After this, the train will be trialled for a month or two, and it is likely to be tested in the North Western Railway zone.
New features of the train
This new sleeper train will include several advanced features and improvements. Based on the feedback received from the chair-car Vande Bharat train, the front nose has been strengthened to reduce noise and avoid collisions. It will have features like armor collision avoidance system, stainless steel car body, and automatic doors. Additionally, it will also include innovative features like special facilities for disabled passengers, sensor-based intercommunication, and LED strips.
Indian Railways is planning to provide a world-class experience in overnight travel through this train, like the Nightjet sleeper trains in Europe. LED strips will be arranged at night for passengers going to the toilet, and there will also be a separate berth for the train attendant.
operational planning
An order was placed with BEML Limited to manufacture 10 rakes of 16-car Vande Bharat sleeper train sets in May 2023. The maximum speed of this train will be 160-180 kmph, and after trial runs, it may be operational by December 2024.
