Violence erupts in Kenya: Violent clashes and demonstrations are taking place in cities of the East African country of Kenya after the Kenyan Parliament passed a controversial bill proposing a tax hike. At least 5 people have died in this violence in the capital Nairobi and more than 150 people have been injured. On Tuesday, police fired tear gas and bullets after thousands of people entered Kenya’s Parliament and set a part of it on fire. Kenya’s President William Ruto on Tuesday said that a tough stand will be taken against “violence and anarchy”. Meanwhile, India has issued an advisory for its citizens.

The Indian Consulate in Kenya said in an advisory posted on the social media platform X, “In view of the current tense situation, all Indians in Kenya are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict non-essential movement and avoid visiting areas affected by protests and violence until the situation clears.” It said, “Please follow local news and the mission’s website and social media handles for updates.”

This bill caused a ruckus
The aim of the Finance Bill was to increase or impose taxes or fees on many daily use goods and services including internet data, fuel, bank transfers and diapers. Last week, in view of the protests, the 16 percent VAT on motor vehicles, vegetable oil and mobile money transfers as well as bread was abolished, but these concessions are not enough for the people amid the ever-rising inflation in Kenya. Through the Finance Bill, the government aims to raise an additional $ 2.7 billion in domestic revenue.
Regarding this finance bill, a youth-led movement had warned President William Ruto’s government against passing the finance bill. They say that this will increase the financial problems of Kenyans. But ignoring this, the MPs passed it. It is also believed that the President will sign it to approve it. However, religious leaders are calling it inappropriate.
