During his visit, Xi Jinping and senior officials underscored the importance of the Party’s firm control and the separation of religion and politics for Tibet’s future. Historically, Tibet was governed by religious leaders, but the political structure was completely altered after the Chinese occupation in the 1950s. China now clearly communicates that religion should be confined to spiritual life, devoid of political influence. Beijing even reserves the right to determine the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. This strategy also includes intervention in language and culture, with the aim to strengthen Mandarin’s dominance in Tibet. The initiative has raised concerns that it could erode Tibetan identity.
