In a stark rejection of any compromise, the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the victim of Nimisha Priya, has refused blood money and is seeking the implementation of Qisas, as per Islamic law. Abdel Fateh Mahdi, Talal’s brother, revealed the family’s decision, dismissing Priya’s claims of abuse and mistreatment. He made it clear that the heinous nature of the crime, including murder and desecration of the body, cannot be forgiven. He refuted Priya’s assertions, stating that such claims were never brought before the Yemeni court. While Yemeni law offers the option of blood money (Diyah) to commute the sentence, the family is steadfast in its demand for justice. Nimisha Priya, who had a business partnership with Talal, was sentenced to death. Efforts to portray Priya as a victim are being resisted by Talal’s family. The execution was postponed following interventions from various parties, including the Indian government.
